Brigid 91: Our Hero: a love story
The most complete version of the story of Hero survives in the poem of Musaeus, of about the fourth century. Hero was a priestess who served Aphrodite of Sestos, and Leander was from Abydos. The two met at a festival of Adonis and fell in love. She promised to light a torch to guide him, and he was willing to swim across the ocean each night to be with her. This went on for many summer nights, and when he arrived at her shore, Hero would anoint him with sweet oils to take away the sea salt harshness on his skin. They made love for many nights. When winter came, the seas were storm tossed. One night there was a storm that extinguished the light of the torch, and Leander drowned. When Hero found his body dead on the rocks, she jumped into the water from the cliffs and drowned herself to be with him. (Stapleton, p. 142, Grant, p. 373-78)
[Note: Grant has a nice writeup on this and mentions that this story is found among folk tales all over Europe. In the Classical literature it appeared in Virgil and Ovid]
